On s’y investit à 150%.

My name is Philippe Verdussen. I am an architect. I created Archi 2000 in 1990 with a partner and a computer.
It is now 25 years later and Archi 2000 is still going strong, mainly within the Brussels market.
Archi 2000 concentrates on one thing alone – and that is architecture. Unlike others we don’t do special techniques, or stability, for example. We just do architecture. In our view that is already complicated enough. However, when it comes to architecture, we take on whatever is put in front of us that we find exciting and inspiring, which may well be building offices…
As with any architecture firm, times were hard for us during the first ten years. We would do a conservatory for a cousin or an attic for a brother or sister, etc. And then, suddenly, things changed and we had in front of us a major, large-scale renovation of a 12,000 m2 office building commissioned by Petercam and CGER. In fact it was a competition that we won. For us it was a really exceptional competition, because 12,000 m2 for a young firm with 3 to 4 people, that really was a big project. And so it was this that launched us and that gave us the profile of tertiary space, office architects. We rode this wave for quite a long time, and then at one point the source dried up. There were too many square metres of office space in Brussels and we had to reposition ourselves. This repositioning was relatively successful, thanks, it has to be said, to certain loyal clients who had also repositioned themselves in the housing sector. We changed to housing and since then have worked on care homes and in the hotel industry. We have built new housing, renovated housing, created new housing with office buildings conversions … in other words it is very varied. This is one of the main qualities of the profession. You never get up in the morning saying to yourself that you are going to be doing the same thing as you did the day before.

On my desk I have Geluck’s Cat, who is important. There is Tintin – I really like comic strips. You will find my ArtPen, which I am never without, and then there will also be a pile of papers that go with our profession – architecture magazines and books.
It is a very tough profession. You have to invest in it 150%. When I look back with the hindsight of 25 years, it strikes me that at one point I must have been completely mad to start out on this profession on my own. I really admire all of the young people around me and who work with me, because the profession of an architect is a demanding one. It is a profession that takes up a lot of time. It is a profession in which you really have to invest. Investing means reading, listening, looking, being curious, travelling. I think that one of the main qualities of a young architect is curiosity.
And so today our firm has some forty architects, all of whom are full time. This number is reasonably stable, in general there are between 35 and 40 of us.
I would say that our strength lies in our team. I believe less and less that it is possible for an architect to work alone today and to be able to control all of the aspects of the job, from the first sketch to the final acceptance of the building. And I think that this strength, this richness of working together as a team is a great advantage for all of us.
