OLYMPIC GAMES – PARIS 2024

To round off the 18th season of Archi Urbain, we decided to head off to Paris. With just a few weeks to go before the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, we caught up with the architect Dominique Perrault, who is planning the athletes’ village, to talk to us about his architecture.

Dorte Mandrup

Dorte Mandrup is a Danish architect who founded her studio Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter in 1999. She imagines architecture in the context of its environment. Out of conviction and ethics, Dorte Mandrup refuses to work in autocratic countries. She has gained worldwide renown for the projects she builds on particularly fragile sites. In 2022, her studio won the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, which recognizes those who contribute to the renewal of sustainable architecture and urban planning practices.

Eduardo Souto de Moura

The winner of the Pritzker Prize in 2011 studied sculpture before turning to architecture at the University of Porto’s School of Fine Arts. He embodies the « Porto School », formed by the emblematic figures of Fernando Távora and Álvaro Siza, which combines rigour and freedom, two approaches to construction that are difficult to reconcile, yet which the Portuguese practice with brio. The former had been his teacher, but it was with the latter that he cut his teeth in 1974, before embarking on a solo career in 1980.

Shigeru Ban

Shigeru Ban is certainly the first Pritzker Prize winner not to be a star architect. He combines traditional commissions with disaster architecture. He likes to test all materials, he likes to look for their limits and believes that any material can be used in construction as long as safety is guaranteed.
