Luc Binst, CEO and architect of the Antwerp-based firm Binst Architects, reflects on the evolution of the practice, which he gradually took over after joining Jo Crepain in 2005. He champions an open, multidisciplinary approach in which architecture interacts with furniture design, interior architecture, urban planning, masterplanning, and artistic integration. He also stresses that being an architect is both a demanding and deeply fulfilling profession. Yet despite these challenges, Luc Binst says he remains deeply passionate about his profession, precisely because it allows him to create tailor-made projects, generate meaningful value for society, and work collectively with a close-knit, versatile team united by a shared ambition.

Il explique avoir insufflé à l’agence une nouvelle dynamique, fondée sur davantage d’innovation, une réflexion conceptuelle plus forte et une identité affirmée, jusqu’au changement de nom en 2018 vers Binst Architects. À ses yeux, l’architecture est indissociable de l’ambition : chaque projet doit porter du sens, exprimer une vision claire et chercher à tirer le meilleur de son contexte, qu’il s’agisse d’une écriture sobre et rigoureuse ou, au contraire, d’une forme plus expressive et iconique.
Il défend une pratique ouverte et multidisciplinaire, où l’architecture dialogue avec le design de mobilier, l’architecture intérieure, l’urbanisme, le masterplanning et l’intégration artistique. Cette diversité nourrit selon lui la richesse du bureau et permet de concevoir chaque projet comme une œuvre cohérente, pensée dans les moindres détails, de l’idée initiale jusqu’à l’enveloppe du bâtiment. Luc Binst insiste également sur la vocation positive de l’architecture, qu’il considère comme un levier capable d’améliorer un quartier, de renforcer l’attractivité d’un lieu et de contribuer à la qualité de vie.
Enfin, il rappelle que le métier d’architecte est à la fois exigeant et passionnant. Il suppose de concilier créativité, sens de la médiation, maîtrise technique, connaissance des réglementations et capacité à naviguer dans un contexte de plus en plus complexe. Malgré ces contraintes, Luc Binst dit aimer profondément cette profession, précisément parce qu’elle permet de créer du sur-mesure, d’apporter une réelle valeur ajoutée à la société et de travailler collectivement avec une équipe qu’il décrit comme soudée, polyvalente et animée par une ambition commune.
