Donc, c’était extrêmement long.

My name is Nadine Flammarion, I am French. I have three hotels: a hotel in Paris, a hotel in La Baule and a hotel in Brussels. I was introduced to Brussels through the bookshop. I create hotels; that’s my profession. I am married to a bookseller and editor who is passionate about contemporary art. It was a real opportunity to create a hotel in this location, in the Galeries, which is such a magical place, and to be able to offer the people of Brussels a certain art of living that I have already tried out in my Parisian hotel. I started again here and it is going very well. I am very pleased as people appreciate the way in which we work, in which we receive people and the way in which we are transforming the location. It is a way of thinking about life.

The Galeries, all of the Galeries, have one single owner, who therefore also owns the bookshop and is also the owner of the hotel. When we found out that the hotel was available there was a very, very long negotiation process in order to obtain the rental agreement for the hotel. It then took even longer for the building permission to be granted, because it is a listed building. So, altogether it took a very long time. And then there were two years of work. And, in fact, when we did begin to work on the buildings, everything was falling down. We therefore had to redo it all – absolutely all of it!

The work was divided into two phases. The first phase was managed by Archi 2000 in collaboration with my daughter, who is an architect. For the second phase, which was also very considerable, we did not work with Archi 2000. My daughter was solely responsible for what is known as the finishing work, but which is far more than just the decoration.

She makes great use of ceramics, which you can see on the counter fronts and in all of the bathrooms, where she designed the ceramic tiles. Then there are the pots, here in the courtyard, and the bedside tables. They are produced by Normandy Ceramics, and are all designed by her.
We work a great deal on the atmosphere. We are anti-decoration. You have to feel good. When you arrive somewhere there must be a feeling of harmony and of peace. You note that there is no fixed decoration on the walls. The decoration is not systematic; it is not imposed on you. You are in a place which is full of many of the things that I like. And if the people that come here have a similar feeling, then I am absolutely delighted.

We don’t put works of art on the walls, we put work on the walls that we like, that belong to us, and that we would like to share with the people who come to this hotel. So that they discover. These are unique works. They are not series chosen by a decorator. These are the things that we love. And then there is the Buren cabin that we have set up on the mezzanine – it’s a meeting point. I don’t think that there are any other hotels where you would see a Buren cabin. There are also works by Sonia Delauney, by Niki de Saint Phalle, and a Pinocchio by Jim Dine. In fact there are many things that you would not see elsewhere, and that are things that belong to us and that give us great pleasure.

As to the meeting with the chef, Julien Burla, who has the starred restaurant the Dôme, in Antwerp … I rang him because I was looking for a chef. We arranged to meet at the Hôtel des Galeries, which was not yet called the Hôtel des Galeries, in fact it wasn’t called anything at all! It was a dreadful building site. He came and we decided to work together. He is accompanied by Benjamin Lagarde, who is on site and who fits in completely with the rest of the team. Here at the Hôtel des Galeries we work as a team.
