At the request of Alexandre Grosjean, director of the Société des Galeries, and of Nadine Flammarion, Archi 2000 took on the renovation-rebuilding of the Hôtel des Galeries in the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert in the very heart of Brussels (Belgium).

C’est à l’initiative de la famille Flammarion, qu’Alexandre Grosjean a rencontrée et qui exploite déjà un petit hôtel similaire à Paris, que nous nous sommes penchés sur la possibilité de faire un hôtel. Il y avait là toute une zone des galeries et, je dirais aussi une zone adjacente aux galeries du côté de la rue des Bouchers, qui étaient complètement désaffectées. On a vraiment retrouvé un véritable taudis mais alors là, on ne peut pas imaginer ce qu’on a trouvé là. Avec un intérieur d’îlot qui était véritablement un conglomérat d’ajouts, de volumes en ruine. Un intérieur d’îlot aussi sinistré en plein cœur de Bruxelles, à 150 mètres de la Grand-Place, c’est absolument incroyable. On ne peut pas se remettre sur la structure de l’ancien hôtel parce que l’ancien hôtel était plus petit, il n’occupait qu’une petite partie de la zone qui nous est confiée. Et, donc, on redessine complètement : il y a deux bâtiments que l’on doit faire coller, il y a des niveaux différents, il y a un jeu d’escaliers, il y a un ascenseur à injecter. C’est vraiment, je dirais, à part les enveloppes extérieures et la partie qui donne sur la galerie, on repart quasiment de zéro. Et donc ça c’est vraiment un travail de cicatrisation urbaine, je dirais. On recicatrise complètement ces bâtiments et c’est complexe parce qu’il faut de nouveau respecter toutes les normes hôtelières, les normes de sécurité, les escaliers de secours, des choses comme ça et donc il faut pas mal d’imagination.
Dans ce que nous avons voulu créer, on a voulu recréer cet intérieur d’îlot dont on a tout de suite senti que cela pouvait avoir des qualités. On l’a découvert dans un très mauvais état mais l’on s’est très vite rendu compte que cet intérieur d’îlot fait partie de l’histoire de ce site et puis, que des chambres donnent comme ça à l’arrière sur cette cour, sur cette ouverture, ça fait partie du charme de cet hôtel. Au niveau de l’extérieur, il y a deux types de parachèvements : soit il y a la brique apparente que l’on a complètement renettoyée, complètement rejointoyée en recherchant les teintes de l’époque, ou bien il y a l’enduit parce que c’était comme ça qu’elles étaient à l’époque. On a retravaillé l’enduit. On a travaillé avec des châssis un peu plus performants acoustiquement pour des chambres d’hôtel. Et, de l’autre côté, côté rue des Bouchers, là on a travaillé les façades en brique qui étaient existantes. On les a restaurées entièrement, rejointoyées, etc. Il y a au niveau du rez des galeries un accès via un bar, puis nous avons un restaurant, une cuisine ouverte, un petit jardin. Donc, c’est assez sympa. Et puis au-dessus du restaurant, il y a un développement de 25 chambres. Tout le concept hôtelier, c’est nous qui l’avons dessiné. Toute la décoration un peu vintage, c’est la fille de monsieur et madame Flammarion qui est architecte d’intérieur qui l’a imaginée. Donc, ça a été une collaboration entre nous, Archi 2000, et une architecte d’intérieur parisienne. Le résultat est frais, le résultat est amusant. Le restaurant est très chouette, très lumineux. Il y a une ancienne grande presse que nous avons complètement restaurée qui se trouve dans le restaurant, il y a un bar sympa et donc, vraiment le résultat est chouette et je crois que l’hôtel marche bien pour l’instant.

It was at the initiative of the Flammarion family, who met with Alexandre Grosjean and already runs a similar small hotel in Paris, that we first saw the possibilities of creating a hotel. An entire section of the Galeries, along with the area next the Galeries on the side of the rue des Bouchers, was completely run down. You cannot imagine the extent of the slum that we found there. The interior of the block was a real conglomeration of added-on bits and ruined spaces. It is absolutely incredible to find a block in such a state in the very heart of Brussels, only 150 m from the Grand Place. Going back to the structure of the original hotel is not possible as the original was much smaller, occupying only a small part of the zone that we are taking on. And so we are redesigning it completely: there are two buildings to be joined together, different levels, a staircase to play with, a lift to put in somewhere. In fact, apart from the exterior walls and the part that looks out over the Galeries, I would say that we really are starting almost from scratch. You could call it a piece of urban surgery. We are completely stitching these buildings together again. It is a complex job that once again has to take into account all of the regulations governing the hotel sector, safety rules, emergency staircases etc., all of which requires considerable imagination.
We really wanted to recreate the interior of this block as we felt from the very beginning that it could have potential. We found it in a very bad state, but we very quickly realised that the inside of this block was part of the history of the site. We also saw that the way in which the bedrooms look out, as they do, over this courtyard at the back, onto this opening, is part of the charm of the hotel. As far as the exterior of the building is concerned, there are two types of finish: either bare brickwork, which has been completely cleaned and re-grouted, using the shades that would have been used at the time, or render, which is how it would have been finished during this period. We have redone the render. We used window frames that are more efficient with regard to the acoustics of hotel rooms. On the other side, the side of the rue des Bouchers, we worked on the existing brick facades, restoring and re-grouting them completely. At the Galeries level there is access via a bar, plus we have a restaurant, an open kitchen, a small garden. Altogether it is really attractive. Then there is a complex of 25 bedrooms over the restaurant. The whole hotel concept is to our design. The vintage-style decoration was done by Mr and Mrs Flammarion’s daughter, who is an interior designer. So it has been a partnership between us, Archi 2000, and a Parisian interior designer. The result is modern and fun. The restaurant is very attractive and very light. We restored a huge old press, which now features in the restaurant, there is an inviting bar, and the result is altogether very pleasant. I think that the hotel is currently doing very well.
