The Egied van Broeckhoven school project in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, part of the Flemish government’s DBFM program, aims to build around forty schools through public-private partnerships. Located in the former Vandenheuvel brewery buildings, this school seeks to become a unifying space connecting the educational environment, the neighborhood, and the broader community.
This project combines innovation with heritage preservation. By highlighting the robust concrete structure of the industrial buildings, it adopts a modern and sustainable approach. The transformation of the former bottling plant into educational spaces relies on smart material reuse and a strong focus on energy efficiency, aligned with the program’s pedagogical and ecological ambitions.
The sports facilities and outdoor areas strengthen community ties. A semi-underground sports hall, topped with a playground, encourages interactions with the neighborhood. The multi-level outdoor spaces are designed for various uses, including relaxation, play, and sports activities. This versatile layout ensures active use even beyond school hours.
Inside, the layout emphasizes functional organization and abundant natural light, creating an environment conducive to learning and social engagement.

Le projet de l’école Egied van Broeckhoven à Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, inscrit dans le programme DBFM du gouvernement flamand, vise à construire une quarantaine d’écoles via des partenariats public-privé. Implantée dans les bâtiments de l’ancienne brasserie Vandenheuvel, cette école a pour ambition de devenir un espace fédérateur entre le milieu scolaire, le quartier et la société.
Ce projet conjugue innovation et préservation du patrimoine. En valorisant la structure robuste en béton des bâtiments industriels, il privilégie une approche durable et moderne. La transformation de l’ancienne usine d’embouteillage en espaces scolaires repose sur une réutilisation intelligente des matériaux et un engagement envers l’efficacité énergétique, en accord avec les ambitions pédagogiques et écologiques du programme.
Les infrastructures sportives et les espaces extérieurs renforcent le lien avec la communauté. Une salle de sport semi-souterraine, surmontée d’une cour de récréation, favorise les interactions avec le voisinage. Les espaces extérieurs, organisés sur plusieurs niveaux, offrent des fonctions variées : détente, jeux et activités sportives. Ce design polyvalent permet une utilisation active, même en dehors des heures scolaires.
À l’intérieur, l’aménagement privilégie une organisation fonctionnelle et baigne les espaces de lumière naturelle, créant un environnement propice à l’apprentissage et à la convivialité.
