Located in the heart of the Heyvaert district of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, well known for the car trade to Africa, this flagship project of the « Petite Senne » sustainable neighbourhood contract is built on the site of a former industrial hall built in 1910 on the Quai de l’Industrie. The site, which extends into the interior of the block, has been transformed into a semi-open public space, accessible to all and accessible to soft mobility. This multifunctional space includes recycling workshops, intergenerational housing, a 72-seat crèche, as well as a future circus school and workshops dedicated to bicycle recycling. The space is designed to be user-friendly, with a wide range of uses: games, sports, markets, exchanges with peripheral functions, small events, etc. The offices of L’Escaut and Zampone placed the importance of water in the landscape at the centre of their thinking. By allowing rainwater harvesting to supply the site’s sanitary water, but also by making it visible through a special scenography in the form of a work of art, while linking it naturally to the canal. Rainwater is also allowed to seep into the water table in the planting beds, creating a natural microcosm.

Situé au cœur du quartier Heyvaert à Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, bien connu pour le commerce de voitures vers l’Afrique, ce projet phare du contrat de quartier durable « Petite Senne » s’implante sur le site d’une ancienne halle industrielle construite en 1910 sur le quai de l’Industrie. Le site, qui s’étend en intérieur d’ilot, a été transformé en un espace public semi-couvert, accessible à tous et à la mobilité douce. Un espace multifonctionnel qui rassemble des ateliers de recyclage, des logements intergénérationnels, une crèche de 72 places, ainsi qu’une future école de cirque et des ateliers dédiés au recyclage de vélos. L’espace se veut convivial de par la multiplicité des usages : jeux, sports, marchés, échanges avec les fonctions périphériques, petits évènements, etc. Les bureaux L’Escaut et Zampone ont notamment placé au centre de leur réflexion l’importance de l’eau dans le paysage. En permettant à la récolte des eaux de pluies d’alimenter les eaux sanitaires du site, mais aussi de la rendre visible par une scénographie particulière au travers d’une œuvre d’art, tout en la reliant naturellement vers le canal. Mais également à l’eau de pluie de s’infiltrer dans la nappe phréatique au niveau des massifs de plantation aménagés, favorisant ainsi un microcosme naturel.
