Shigeru Ban is certainly the first Pritzker Prize winner not to be a star architect. He works on normal commission work as well in disaster architecture. He likes to test all materials, he likes to look for their limits and believes that any material can be used in construction as long as safety is guaranteed.
Aptly dubbed the « architect of emergencies » for his temporary housing created to help countries hit by natural and humanitarian disasters such as Haiti, Rwanda and Japan, Shigeru Ban’s emblematic projects include the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the Mount Fuji World Heritage Centre in Shizuoka, Japan, the La Seine Musicale music complex in Boulogne-Billancourt, and the Swatch and Omega headquarters in Biel, Switzerland.

Shigeru Ban est certainement le premier Pritzker Prize à ne pas être un star-architecte. Il allie les commandes traditionnelle à celles de l’architecture de catastrophe. Il aime tester tous les matériaux, il aime chercher leurs limites et pense que n’importe quel matériau peut être utiliser dans la construction tant que la sécurité est garantie.
Surnommé à juste titre architecte de l’urgence pour ses logements temporaires créés pour venir en aide aux pays frappés par des catastrophes naturelles et humanitaires comme Haïti, le Rwanda et le Japon, Shigeru Ban a réalisé des projets emblématiques parmi lesquels le Centre Pompidou-Metz, le Centre du patrimoine mondial du Mont Fuji à Shizuoka au japon, le complexe musical de La Seine Musicale à Boulogne-Billancourt, et le siège de Swatch et Omega à Bienne en Suisse.
