AL
Wir haben lange in Europa gelebt,
FR
AN
We’ve lived a bit everywhere in Europe.

AL
erst in Amsterdam und dann in Paris
FR
d’abord à Amsterdam puis Paris
AN
First in Amsterdam, then Paris

AL
und dann in Barcelona und dann wieder in Rotterdam,
FR
puis Barcelone et à nouveau Rotterdam.
AN
then Barcelona, and Rotterdam again.

AL
und dann haben wir irgendwann probiert,
FR
À un moment nous nous sommes dit
AN
At one point we thought

AL
AN
that what we needed was a city that brought together

AL
FR
la culture française (mon mari est Français)
AN
French and Germanic culture (my husband is French)

AL
und die Germanofonische Kultur zusammen,
FR
et germanophone, et c’est comme ça
AN
and that’s how

AL
und dann sind wir auf Brüssel gekommen.
FR
que nous sommes arrivés à Bruxelles.
AN
we ended up in Brussels.

AL
FR
Nous sommes tombés amoureux de cette ville,
AN
We fell in love with this city,

AL
und ich habe die Belgische Staatsangehörigkeit angenommen.
FR
AN
and meanwhile I even adopted Belgian nationality.

AL
Brüssel hat diese ….hmmm … Chaos…?
FR
Bruxelles a une sorte de… chaos.
AN
Brussels has a kind of…chaos.

AL
AN
What I think is good about Brussels

AL
dass man hier Dinge machen kann,
FR
AN
is that you can do things here

AL
AN
that you can’t do in other cities,

AL
weil die Städte kontrolliert sind.
FR
parce que ces villes sont très contrôlées.
AN
because those cities are so controlled.

AL
Selbst in Barcelona ist da alles kontrolliert.
FR
Même à Barcelone, tout est contrôlé.
AN
Even in Barcelona, everything is controlled.

AL
AN
At midnight, machines start functioning on the beach,

AL
AN
and you can’t spend the night there anymore

AL
was noch vor 20 Jahren der Fall war.
FR
comme c’était le cas il y a 20 ans.
AN
like you could 20 years ago.

AL
In Berlin ist es so hip geworden.
FR
Berlin est devenue une ville très branchée,
AN
Berlin has become a very trendy city,

AL
Diese Aktivitäten zu machen zum öffentlichen Raum,
FR
mais les activités dans l’espace public
AN
but activity in the public space

AL
die sind aber größtenteils kontrolliert.
FR
sont très très contrôlées.
AN
is very tightly controlled.

AL
Das Unkontrollierte gibt es kaum noch.
FR
AN
There’s almost nothing anymore that’s not controlled.

AL
In Brüssel ist das Interessante,
FR
Ce qui est intéressant à Bruxelles,
AN
What’s interesting in Brussels

AL
AN
is that there is still space for what is not controlled.

AL
aber nicht weil es gewollt ist.
FR
Pas parce que c’est voulu,
AN
Not because it’s intended but

AL
FR
mais cette liberté ressort de ce chaos
AN
this freedom simply springs from this chaos that

AL
aus diesen neunzehn verschiedenen Städten.
FR
AN
comes from the existence of 19 different municipalities.

AL
Wie z.B. Prostitution,
FR
Prenez la prostitution.
AN
Take prostitution.

AL
die eigentlich verboten ist in Brüssel,
FR
Elle est en fait interdite à Bruxelles,
AN
In fact it’s prohibited in Brussels

AL
die aber möglich ist,
FR
mais elle est possible,
AN
but anyway it is possible,

AL
AN
because in Brussels there are these grey “in-between” zones.

AL
weil die Kontrolle nicht so besteht
FR
Parce qu’il n’y a pas ce contrôle
AN
Because there isn’t the control

AL
wie in anderen Städten.
FR
comme dans d’autres villes.
AN
that there is in other cities.

AL
Ungewollt.
FR
Sans que ce soit voulu.
AN
Unintentionally.

AL
Mit Sicherheit wäre zum Beispiel Fairground Pleasures,
FR
Je prends l’exemple de ‘Fairground Pleasures’,
AN
I’ll take the example of “Fairground Pleasures”

AL
FR
si tu t’en souviens.
AN
if you remember it.

AL
FR
J’avais à l’époque filmé la foire,
AN
I had at the time filmed the Fair,

AL
und danach Interventionen gemacht habe.
FR
et ensuite j’avais interviewé des gens.
AN
and then I’d interviewed people.

AL
Ich habe damals keine Erlaubnis gefragt,
FR
Je n’avais demandé aucune autorisation
AN
I hadn’t requested any authorisation

AL
diese städtischen Interventionen zu machen.
FR
pour faire ces tournages en ville.
AN
to make these films in the city.

AL
Meiner Meinung nach wäre sowas
FR
À mon avis, ce genre de chose
AN
I don’t think that kind of thing

AL
in Deutschland zumindest nicht möglich.
FR
ne serait pas possible en Allemagne.
AN
would be possible in Germany.

AL
Ähnlich, im Rotlichtviertel,
FR
Autre exemple, le quartier chaud…
AN
Another example is the red-light district …

AL
ich weiß nicht,
FR
Je ne sais pas si en Allemagne,
AN
I’m not sure the politicians

AL
ob die Politik in Deutschland darin investiert hätte,
FR
les politiques auraient investi dans le soutien
AN
in Germany would have invested in supporting

AL
um z.B. Kunstprojekte im Rotlichtviertel zu unterstützen.
FR
AN
artistic projects in this kind of area.

AL
Kann ich nicht sagen,
FR
Je ne peux pas l’affirmer,
AN
I can’t be sure of it,

AL
weil ich in Deutschland nie gearbeitet habe,
FR
AN
as I’ve never worked in Germany,

AL
AN
but I imagine it would have been quite marginal.

AL
FR
J’imagine qu’un projet comme ‘Parckfarm’
AN
I imagine that a project like “Parckfarm”

AL
AN
would have been possible in a city like Berlin,

AL
und dass es einfacher gewesen wäre,
FR
AN
and that it might have been easier to

AL
so ein Projekt zu entwickeln,
FR
un projet de ce type.
AN
set up a project of that type there.

55. AL
weil einfach der Wille da ist,
FR
AN
Quite simply because the will is there

AL
um so ein Typ von Projekten zusammen
FR
de développer ce type de projets
AN
to set up these kinds of projects

AL
mit den Bewohnern zu realisieren.
FR
avec les habitants.
AN
with the residents.

AL
Brüssel ist eine Stadt,
FR
Bruxelles est une ville qui accorde
AN
Brussels is a city that gives

AL
die viel Aufmerksamkeit den Partizipationen gibt,
FR
beaucoup d’attention aux participations,
AN
a great deal of attention to participative projects

AL
ähnlich wie Berlin.
FR
comme Berlin.
AN
like Berlin.

AL
Und das Gute ist natürlich auch,
FR
AN
What’s good is that we are

AL
dass wir ein forschungsorientiertes Büro sind,
FR
un bureau orienté sur la recherche,
AN
a firm that’s geared towards research,

AL
AN
and that we actually prefer to do one project at a time,

AL
und nicht mehrere Projekte gleichzeitig.
FR
et pas plusieurs projets en même temps.
AN
rather than several at once.

AL
FR
Nous nous disons donc rarement
AN
We rarely find ourselves saying

AL
wir brauchen jetzt unbedingt ein zweites Projekt.
FR
‘il nous faut absolument un deuxième projet’.
AN
“We really must have a second project”.

AL
AN
When one project is completed, another one begins.

AL
Bisher hat es gut geklappt.
FR
Jusqu’à présent cela nous a bien réussi.
AN
Up to now that has been very successful for us.

AL
FR
Attendons de voir pour la suite.
AN
We’ll have to wait and see what happens next.

AL
Was mich interessiert an Architektur,
FR
Ce qui m’intéresse en architecture,
AN
What interests me in architecture

AL
ist der gelebte Raum.
FR
c’est l’espace vécu.
AN
is lived-in space.

AL
Das heißt, Architektur normalerweise limitiert sich
FR
C’est-à-dire que l’architecture se limite
AN
Meaning that architecture usually

AL
Architektur an den gebauten Raum,
FR
normalement à l’espace construit,
AN
confines itself to the space constructed,

AL
das Gebaute, die Wand, die Steine etc.
FR
au bâtiment, aux murs, aux pierres, etc.
AN
to the building, the walls, the stones, etc

AL
Aber was mich interessiert, darüber hinaus zu gehen
FR
AN
But what interests me is to go beyond all that,

AL
FR
de me demander comment on peut comprendre
AN
to ask myself how one can understand

AL
in weiterem Sinne begreifen,
FR
l’architecture dans un sens plus poussé.
AN
architecture in a more extensive sense.

AL
AN
So as to also see what becomes of the lived-in space

AL
der durch Menschen geschaffen wird
FR
qui a été créé par des hommes
AN
which was created by men,

AL
und sich verändert über die verschiedenen Jahre,
FR
AN
and how it changes over the years,

AL
vor allem in der Stadt selbst.
FR
surtout dans la ville.
AN
especially in the city.

AL
Das heißt der öffentliche Raum
FR
En somme, on pourrait dire l’espace public
AN
In other words you could say

AL
FR
de l’architecture de la ville.
AN
the public space of the city’s architecture.

AL
Was wir in Alive Architecture machen,
FR
Ce que nous faisons chez Alive Architecture,
AN
What we do at Alive Architecture

AL
ist eigentlich mit der existierenden räumlichen
FR
AN
is to actually work with the existing

AL
sowie sozialen Situation zu arbeiten.
FR
et sociale existante.
AN
spatial and social situation.

AL
Das heißt wir observieren, was ist da,
FR
AN
Meaning that we observe what exists,

AL
was sind die Talente,
FR
quels sont les talents,
AN
what the best elements are,

AL
und was ist die bestehende räumliche Situation,
FR
quelle est la situation spatiale existante,
AN
what the existing spatial situation is,

AL
die Qualitäten,
FR
quelles sont les qualités…
AN
what its qualities are…

AL
FR
Et puis ‘clic’, nous stimulons tout cela
AN
And then “click”, we stimulate all that

AL
um genutzt zu werden,
FR
pour que ce soit bien exploité.
AN
so that it can be well used.

AL
Wir nutzen und verstärken die bestehende Identität,
FR
Nous exploitons et renforçons l’identité existante,
AN
We exploit and reinforce the existing identity,

AL
AN
so that the space actually remains what it was before,

AL
FR
mais d’une façon renforcée et activée.
AN
though more strengthened and activated.
