PART 1

Ça, c’était un try out.

PART 1
For a number of years we have been regularly involved in various activities – that I prefer calling “societal” rather than “social”.
Two years ago we bought a large building of around 25-30,000 sqm, on the Willebroeck quay.
Brussels people know where “Tour and Taxis” is.
Well just across the street from there we bought an old Post Office headquarters that we are going to convert into apartments.

The BAD was started a year ago.
Its legal status is a non-profit organisation that was formed with a specific desire to work in a different way from a gallery, or an art display space.
In fact it’s not an art display space, and it’s not a gallery, but an anarchical determination to invest in empty places.
We had an opportunity to invest in this place, with the help of AG Real Estate playing a sort of “angel” role.
AG Real Estate gave us this empty building for at least one year, the time it would take for them to get an operating permit.
It’s the first initiative of this type to give artists an opportunity to enjoy an optimal creative space, of on average 110 sqm.
And this on financial conditions that defy all the competition, since the principle is basically that the asset is used, with all charges covered for a relatively modest amount.
So for the artists, this opportunity has proved to be quite literally a chance of a lifetime, and it has all worked very well.
The aim now is actually to continue with BAD’s activities and of course its activities with the artists.

Like all Belgians we were confronted last year with what was being called the migrant crisis.
We were contacted by Citizens Platform to see what we could do to help.
What we did was put the ground floor of this building at the disposal of Citizens Platform so that they had a place where they could help these migrants.
Like helping them to learn some basic French and Dutch, and providing them with a medical service.
You can imagine that the Syrian who crossed Greece and who had had to deal with the Greek sun didn’t necessarily have the right clothes for getting through the winter here.
The Belgians were very generous, donating a huge amount of clothing to these migrants.
But all this had to be organised. And well, everything was indeed organised, by Citizens Platform in our building.

I think that everyone, in moments of crisis, must assume some responsibility.
There is any number of citizens here who do just that, volunteering their services every day.
I think that sometimes the State should actually accept a little more responsibility in welcoming the refugees.
And I also think that on the whole it’s quite positive that the private sector is playing a role in what is a societal responsibility.
And that it is in fact supportive of these refugees, as well as of the people who are trying to help them find solutions.

PART 2
We gave Mister Emma the use of a loft, actually one of the sections of the basement of the Centre Monnaie.

In summer 2014 I was looking for a place to celebrate the 10 years of my website and came across AG Real Estate.
In two meetings we agreed to take possession of 1000 square metres in the old commercial centre called the Centre Monnaie.
It’s right in the centre of Brussels, very near the Place de Brouckère.
And there, in two months, we organised concerts, exhibitions – more than 40 events.
It really was a magical place. Everyone who went there felt like they were in Berlin or New York in the seventies.

The people of Brussels – those who walk through the city centre – are aware that these days the Centre Monnaie’s basement has been emptied of all occupants.
But we are now the owners, and we’re going to develop it into a new, very modern gallery that will be cater for all of today’s needs.

In December 2010 I was contacted by Alain De Coster who asked me to attend a graffiti party.
The company had an office building that was scheduled for demolition in Place Frère Orban, in Brussels’ European Quarter.
They had invited various graffiti collectives to come over for a weekend and indulge in their pleasure on thousands of square metres of walls.
AG Real Estate had agreed to pay for the spray cans and the sandwiches, and I attended a really amazing event.

So what is exactly happening? Well it’s a bit like when the tide goes out at the beach.
You sometimes feel like drawing something on the sand before the tide comes back in.
And here, we just had the idea that this building had 7000 square metres of blank walls.
Well they’re blank now but they won’t be for long.
They weren’t blank last week because there were still some European civil servants working in the offices, and they won’t be next week as the demolition crews will be doing their job.
So, we thought why not make the most of the moment to allow street artists to express themselves in a place where they feel warm and relaxed, and to meet young people.
Around 70 young people have been invited today to learn all about the artistic techniques of graffiti.

I am the organiser of the Cat Club events, that have been going for some 13 years in Brussels.
The main concept of the Cat Club is that it happens in a different building every time, buildings in various parts of the city, but never in night clubs.
And it’s always abandoned buildings, either waiting for a permit or demolition.
I think it’s really important for me to have good contacts with real estate developers and architects offices.
I met AG Real Estate, and we’ve been working together for two years now, and I was able to do several events in various buildings.

The first event was at the Centre Monnaie. It was a try-out really.
It went fantastically well, and afterwards they talked to me about another place that they had available – the GB58.
After a month of work I was ready to put on three events there.
The first event was for Art Brussels, which was a huge success.
And also a huge number of people came to see how the GB had been transformed.
The second event was for Gay Pride. And I also did an event for the Beursschouwburg.
As the GB has an area of 1,800 sqm we put on a roller disco event.

PART 1
