The winner of the Pritzker Prize in 2011 studied sculpture before turning to architecture at the University of Porto’s School of Fine Arts. He embodies the « Porto School », formed by the emblematic figures of Fernando Távora and Álvaro Siza, which combines rigour and freedom, two approaches to construction that are difficult to reconcile, yet which the Portuguese practice with brio. The former had been his teacher, but it was with the latter that he cut his teeth in 1974, before embarking on a solo career in 1980.

Le lauréat du Pritzker Prize en 2011 a étudié la sculpture avant de se tourner vers l’architecture à l’école des Beaux-arts de l’université de Porto. Il incarne l’«École de Porto», formée par les figures emblématiques de Fernando Távora et Álvaro Siza, qui combine rigueur et liberté, deux approches de la construction difficilement conciliables que les Portugais pratiquent pourtant avec brio. Le premier avait été son professeur mais c’est chez le second qu’il fait ses armes en 1974, avant d’entamer une carrière solo en 1980.
